Macy's Organ

Since I spent the weekend in Philadelphia, PA, I'll have to show you photos from there (at least for the next couple of days!) This is a photo of the organ in what was originally the Wanamaker's Department store in Philadelphia. (It's now a Macy's department store.) The organ was made a historic landmark in 1980. They still play the organ twice a day and more at Christmas time and for special events. It's the largest operational organ in the world. We heard it when we were there and it sounded beautiful. Have a good week!

How interesting! I am ashamed to admit that I do not know Philly that well, although it is so close to the city. I will have to remedy to this one of those weekends! Have a good week!

Looks more like a cathedral than a department store. Nice perspective shot!

I hope you had a good time in Philly! Although I am closer to Philadelphia, I don't spend much time there - if I want to go to a museum or have a nice day in a city, it's always New York! Did you see any other sites?
If you liked the organ at this time of the year, you should definitely try to make it down at Christmas time. This wall is a huge light display from about the 2nd floor to the top floor, and the light show runs with the organ music. At least that is the way it was before Macy's took over the store, back when it was a Wanamakers store. It's really cool!

Sounds like you had a good time there! Wanamakers has an interesting history of enlightened retailing. At least Macy's supports the history too, although there is a freinds of the organ group as well. Philly is not one of my favorite towns except for the historic sights and museums, but must see (and hear) this next time I'm there!
