Little Red Lighthouse

Here's a picture today of the little red lighthouse underneath the George Washington Bridge. It was made famous in a children's book called "The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge" by Hildegarde Swift. I've never read the book myself but I want to one of these days. I wonder how big the lighthouse actually looks up close? It is at Ft. Washington Park and 178th Street in Manhattan.

Wow have I missed a few posts. I love this picture. I am a big lighthouse fan but being in Missouri don't get to see too many.

I really like your old and new picture. Your building is just a tad bigger than the one I took!!!

Thanks for stopping by the blog.

Looking at the top deck of the bridge above I would say that the lighthouse looks like a large truck standing on its end.
When I was younger I always wanted to be a lighthouse keeper. Just as I was getting to the age where I might be able to take a shot at it they all started going automatic.
Such is life.

I've driven across that bridge several times, and I never knew there was a lighthouse down there. This photo emphasizes how tiny it is!

Wow, that is a great shot. It reminds me of the Golden Gate Bridge. From where did you take the photo?

Lighthouses are my favorite. We have an old one here on Morris Island.

Hi all, thanks for stopping by today and commenting!

Keropok man, I would guess it's not in use any more, but I don't know for sure. Probably just for tourists.

Gudl, I took the picture from Riverbank State Park. I'm going to show pictures from there in the near future.

Bergson, that's true. It could be the lighthouse from Guilvinec! How funny.

See you everyone!

I never realize how tall the George Washington bridge is, the last time I was on that bridge was doing rush hour back in 1981 sitting in a rig (18-wheeler) and all I could feel was the constant shaking the whole time we were stuck at a stand still on that bridge.

And to think there is a little red light house underneath which is something I never knew about.

First of all, wonderful pic. That is such a neat thing to see. I haven't read the book you mentioned either, and I've never been to NYC other than to change planes so this is new to me.

Judging by the white 18-wheeler's cab on the bridge above and comparing to the lighthouse, I'd estimate the lighthouse to be around 40-50feet tall. The cab of a truck like that is generally 13-14 feet tall, and the lighthouse looks to be three or four times the height of the truck.

I'm another lighthouse lover too -- odd sometimes when huge structures dwarf them but no less fascinating.
