Trinity Steeple

It's hard to imagine a time when the church steeples were the tallest structures in Manhattan. Now the skyscrapers tower over them. This is a picture of the steeple from Trinity Church, one of the oldest congregations in the city. The church is at Broadway and Wall Street in the midst of what is now the financial district. The following description is from the website of Trinity Church.

There have been three Trinity Church buildings at Broadway and Wall Street. The present Trinity Church, designed by Richard Upjohn and consecrated on Ascension Day in 1846, is considered a classic example of Gothic Revival architecture and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Since its founding by charter of King William III of England in 1697, the Parish of Trinity Church has played a pivotal role in the religious life of this city and nation.

Is this the beautiful church with the elevated garden? I was there last year with some friends from out of town.

It is an impressive building.

This is one of the things I love about the East ~~ you buildings are so much older than those here in CA.

I love old church buildings, and this one is beautiful.

It looks a quiet secluded spot.

How beautiful! Especially the larger version in which the steeple rises out of the trees.

What a beautiful building! (The church, that is.) The sky scraper can't hold a candle to it.

Quite true, the perspective of the buildings are a contrast.

Every time I see St. Patrick's Cathedral, I think the same thing! How could it possibly be the largest Gothic cathedral in the U.S.?! It looks so small surrounded by all those tall buildings!

Great picture!

Its a lovely looking Church. I like how your angle captures the size of the neighbouring skyscrapers. The overwhelm the church!

I look forward to catching up with you on my return from Greece :)

I've visited Trinity several times and always wondered how a simple meek tiny church held it's own in such a coveted location. Then I read a history of New York and it mentioned how much land the church owns in downtown Manhattan. According to this book the church is extremely wealthy. Most of the land they still own and just lease.
Beautiful picture.
