Harlem Bridge

I think I've shown this bridge before (or maybe it's an overpass) but anyway I was crossing the street the other day and captured this shot as I was going across. This is on 125th Street, near the west side highway. Nothing special to say about this one, I just like the patterns made by the arches. Nothing is green here yet, so I don't have an appropriate St. Patrick's day photo for you.

I like the way you framed the great perspective, and the choice of b+w was inspired, allowing us to focus on the myriad patterns of steel. The structure is crossing Manhattan Valley, but I'm not sure what it's purpose.

I know the subway, today's #1 line, comes out of a 125' deep mountain tunnel near that area and then shoots across the valley on an elevated steelwork structure, but not sure if this is it. The somewhat ornamental steelwork of the secondary arches would date it to the right period, the very early 20th Century.

Will try to find more.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

It took a few tries during the day, but found that it's the Riverside Drive Viaduct built in 1900 to carry an extension from Riverside Drive over the Manhattan Valley to Washington Heights. Wiki adds, "...the structure was...inspired by America’s late 19th-century City Beautiful movement.

The elevated subway line that I mentioned above and its large arched bridge is a few blocks east, near Broadway and that tunnel is 180 feet below Ft. Washington and Ft. Tryon Park and it exits at Dyckman Street (201st).

I love these shots and bridges / overpasses similar to this often appear in films set in NY. I just love bridges anyway!
