Green-Wood

This is the entrance to Green-Wood Cemetery, a National Historic Landmark in Brooklyn and the final resting place to some famous New Yorkers. It's a beautiful place to visit, especially in the fall when the leaves are changing. More than a century ago it was a big tourist attraction and people used to drive through the wandering paths in their horse-drawn carriages. The entrance is also the roosting place for some exotic birds which escaped from a shipment at Kennedy airport many years ago.

Here you can see some of them. They make quite a noise with their chirping.

Interesting pictures and write up. The birds look like paraqueets?? Old cemetries often become places to visit on the tourist trail.

Your 11/11 post on Green-Wood prompted me to read more about it that evening. The Monk Parrots originally are from a temporate zone of South America, so NY winters are no problem. They are helping preserve the structure as they have displaced pigeons: it seems that parrot residue is not acidic like that of the birds they replaced...

Ps. Eight "big runs" - this 5K man is in awe of your accomplishments!

Hi Lori! Sorry for the long delay in coming here, but the last two weeks were too hectic!
Finally I managed to get to your blog, and see some wonderful pictures! Loved the birds in the cemetery. Amazing!!
Minerva's view is great, but the blocking building is awful... ;)
Great shot of Times square!!
Meanwhile Blogtrotter is back to Greece in November 2007 and waits for your comments! Hope you enjoy and have a great weekend!

They look like some kind of parrot. How do they survive the winter up that way?

I love to visit cemeteries, but we have nothing so old in CA.

As a youngster, we use to play in the old cemetery across the street from our home.

Are those parrots? Reminds me of the parrots on Telegraph Hill in San Francisco. Very cool pictures. Hope we get to see some of the cemetery interior. Cemeteries in NYC blow me away! They're so congested. It's like mini-versions of the New York skyline, but for the dead.
