I'm not sure why anyone would want to deface a tree like this. Leaving their mark for all posterity I guess. This tree was in Fort Tryon Park in northern Manhattan.

I've never realy understood that compulsion, either, particularly in regard to carving up a living tree. (LOL - "Tree tattoos")
