Soldiers and Sailors Monument

This is a photo of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. According to Wikipedia it commemorates the Union Army soldiers and sailors who served in the American Civil War. It was dedicated on Memorial Day, 1902 and takes the form of a Corinthian temple. That's the Hudson River and New Jersey in the background.

Cricket

I also saw this cricket game on my trip to Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens. I'm afraid I know nothing about the sport but it did look very interesting. The players seemed very intent on their game.

Spiderman

Is that spiderman I just saw flying by?! Kite flying seems to be a very popular past time in Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens. The towers you can see are part of the New York State Pavilion that was designed by Philip Johnson for the 1964-65 World's Fair. The taller tower was the highest point of the fair and held an observation deck for visitors.

Post-Its

I was walking through Vanderbilt Hall in Grand Central Terminal a few weeks ago and came across this billboard, the world's largest made of Post-it notes. It was there to mark the 30th anniversary of Post-it notes and included an exhibition and competition of student-created art works as well.

Evening Scene

This is a shot of the plaza at Lincoln Center on a recent summer's night. That's the Metropolitan Opera on the left and Avery Fisher Hall on the right. Enjoy your weekend everyone!!

High Line Art: Viewing Station

This is a view from the High Line, the elevated park near the meatpacking district, as seen through an interactive exhibit called "Viewing Station" designed by the artist Richard Galpin. Visitors can look through this cut-out for an interesting view of the surrounding buildings. You can read more about it here.

India Day (3)

Who knew there was dancing called Bollywood Funk New York! These are some dancers from a group with that name at the India Day Festival last weekend. It looked like fun!

Festive Dog

This dog was in the spirit of the India Day festival on Sunday with his Indian flag. I couldn't manage to get a shot of him from the front. I always love a roly-poly dog!

This is some of the delicious food that had at the annual India Day celebration this past weekend. It was yummy!

Bamboo

This is another photo from my visit to the Metropolitan Museum. This is the exhibit they have on the roof now called "Big Bambu" created by the artists Doug and Mike Starn. It's meant to look like a cresting wave and it's even possible to climb about on it. Very neat. Enjoy your weekend!

Dresses

I saw the American Woman fashion exhibit recently at the Metropolitan Museum and these were two of the gorgeous dresses on display. These were 1920s era dresses and were so beautiful in person. I wanted to try on everything in the exhibit!

Dragon Boat Festival continued

This is a shot from one of the performances at the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in Corona Park, Queens. I'm afraid I don't know the name of the band. They were great though!

Dragon Boat Festival

This weekend I went to the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival, an annual event in Flushing Meadows Corona Park Queens. The festival includes boat races and lots of food plus traditional Chinese dance and music, martial arts and other cultural events. You can read more about the festival here. It was a lot of fun!

Bomboloni

I recently had a delicious Italian filled donut (called a bomboloni) at this bakery on the Upper West Side on Columbus Avenue at 68th Street. If you are in the neighborhood, I would recommend stopping by! Why didn't I think to take a picture of the bomboloni itself instead of the sign!

Chelsea Market

This is a shot from Chelsea Market, a conglomeration of various gourmet food shops and bakeries found under one roof in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. It's always worth a visit, especially if you are hungry! (I'm searching through the old shots, sorry if I've posted this before!)

Summer Flowers

Some colorful summer flowers for today. I love passing the flower stands, which brighten many a street corner here. It's hard to pass them by without buying something!

Sculpture

This is a sculpture I spotted recently going into the subway at 72nd Street and Broadway. "Odalisca" is by the Spanish artist Manolo Valdes and is one of 16 sculptures of his on display along Broadway until January. You can read more about them here.
