High Line

I went last weekend to take a look at the new High Line. It's an amazing park that was built on an elevated platform from the Meatpacking district to Chelsea. It's a gorgeous place with wonderful views and lovely plantings. I can't wait to go back!

Mixture of styles

These are a few of the buildings I saw recently in the Chelsea neighborhood in Manhattan. The building on the left (the IAC Building) was designed by the architect Frank Gehry and was finished, I believe, in 2007. I'd love to go back and see what it looks like at night. I like the mixture of architectural styles amongst the buildings here.

Clearwater

Last weekend was Marina Day at the 79th Street Boat Basin on the west side of Manhattan. One of the boats that was there was the sloop Clearwater, an educational vessel that goes along the Hudson River and Long Island Sound to educate people about the importance of caring for our local waterways. Here is some information about the Clearwater from their website (http://www.clearwater.org/):

Clearwater is a 106-foot wooden sailing sloop designed after 18th and 19th century Dutch sailing sloops. In 1966, folk singer and activist Pete Seeger had the vision that the public would come to care for all of our threatened waterways by learning to care for one boat and one river. He inspired a group of dedicated people who made the dream a reality. Launched in 1969, Clearwater serves as a moveable classroom, laboratory, stage, and forum.

Street Sweets

I guess trucks selling specialty foods are popping up in cities everywhere. They seem to be especially popular here now with different ones selling gelato and dumplings and other various foods. I'm not sure what this one sells but I loved the color and the eye catching design.

Met Roof Exhibit

Some may remember when I showed a visit to the roof of the Metropolitan Museum of Art a few years back. I visited again recently and they are showing a sculpture by the artist Roxy Paine called Maelstrom (2009). It's very cool! This is some info from the museum's website: "The latest in a diverse body of work, this sculpture is one of the artist’s Dendroids based on systems such as vascular networks, tree roots, industrial piping, and fungal mycelia. Set against Central Park and its architectural backdrop, the installation explores the interplay between the natural world and the built environment amid nature’s inherently chaotic processes."

Gantry Crane

This is a night shot of one of the old cranes that are no longer in use along the waterfront in Long Island City Queens. Long Island City is just across the East River from Midtown Manhattan and is a great neighborhood. This crane is in Gantry Plaza State Park, a beautiful park with a great view of Manhattan as well.

Love Lane

Isn't this a nice street name on which to live? I saw this Love Lane sign on a recent walk in the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn. Brooklyn Heights is one of the prettiest areas in New York with lovely streets and charming brownstones. I love to take a walk there. It also has nice street names like Pineapple Street and of course Love Lane.

More artists

Continuing on with yesterday's artist theme, here are some artists I saw in midtown who will do a caricature of you for $5! Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. I haven't tried it yet, but maybe I should!

Jackson Portrait

Back from my summer break! This weekend I saw a street artist doing a sidewalk portrait of Michael Jackson. He was definitely attracting a lot of attention from passers by. That night we had a big thunderstorm so I hope it didn't wash away. He seemed to be a talented artist.

Summer Break!

I hope you all spend the fourth of July weekend in a place as nice as this! This is a shot from a trip to Maine last year. I'm going to be taking a summer pause for a week or so and will be back shortly. I wish you all a good weekend and a good next week!

Multi-layered building

Walking in midtown Manhattan I looked up and saw this multi-layered building. I have no idea what building it is, but I liked the architecture and the designs along the tops of each level. (I also have no idea if I posted this photo before, so sorry if I have!) I don't know anything about the building, I imagine it's an office building or apartments.

Pylons

Runing low on photos again, but I found this shot I took at the Pier in Long Island City Queens. I have no idea what those colorful poles are for, or if they serve any purpose any more. Perhaps someone knows? I don't think any boats come that way any more. Anyway, they caught my eye. Enjoy your day!
