Art Deco

This is another picture I took a while ago. (You can tell I'm running out of photos!) These figures are found on the outside of Radio City Music Hall in Midtown. It opened in the 1930s so I figure it has an Art Deco style. I thought the details were very colorful. I hope everyone has a nice weekend and see you Monday!

Grand Central Terminal Clock

Here’s another shot I took a while ago of the clock outside Grand Central Terminal on 42nd Street. Probably if you have been to New York before, you’ve taken the same shot! This is some information from Wikipedia:

Outside the station, the clock in front of the Grand Central facade facing 42nd Street contains the world's largest example of Tiffany glass and is surrounded by sculptures carved by the John Donnelly Company of Minerva, Hercules and Mercury. For the terminal building French sculptor Jules-Felix Coutan created what was at the time of its unveiling (1914) considered to be the largest sculptural group in the world. It was 48 feet (14.6 m) high, the clock in the center having a circumference of 13 feet (4 m).

Colorful Wall

I took this photo several months ago when I walked past this advertisement for a concert at Town Hall. I forgot about it until I walked by the same place last week, and noticed that the wall is painted a plain green now. Nothing lasts forever I guess!

Another Old and New

Here's another example of older and newer architecture in New York. A visitor to this blog had suggested once that I take a photo featuring these two buildings. I found this one that I had from a few months back. I'm afraid I don't know the buildings. I like the older one much better!

Nothing special today, just a sunset view I took looking out over Harlem from the 125th Street subway platform a few weeks ago. Have a nice week everyone!

National Museum of the American Indian

Back in June I showed a photo of a window from the National Museum of the American Indian. Today I thought I would show you what the whole room looks like. It is located in the U.S. Custom House in lower Manhattan. It's a nice museum and is free if you are able to visit some time. I wish you all a good weekend and see you Monday!

Bryant Park Movies

There are so many fun things to do in New York in the summertime. These people were waiting to watch "Casablanca" in Bryant Park last week, part of the summer-long film series in the Park. The movie doesn't start till after dark, but lots of people get there early to stake out their spots. I don't think there was any room left that day!

Decorated Subway

I've been seeing more subways in New York which are covered in advertisements. Every surface in this one was covered, even the seats and doors. This one looked nice because it was supposed to look like an aquarium. It was a different change from the usual yellow and orange seats!

Tweed Courthouse

When I was downtown last weekend I took this picture of the former “Tweed Courthouse” on Chambers Street in Manhattan. Here is some history:
The Old New York County Courthouse, better known as Tweed Courthouse, is architecturally one of New York's greatest civic monuments. Built between 1861 and 1881, it is the product of two of New York's most prominent 19th century architects, John Kellum and Leopold Eidlitz . Tweed is a designated New York City landmark and sections of the interior are designated interior landmarks as well.
The Tweed Courthouse is the legacy of Tammany Hall boss William M. Tweed (1823-1878), who used the construction of the building to embezzle large sums from the budget. Boss Tweed was tried in 1873 in an unfinished courtroom in this building and was convicted and jailed. After the Tweed Ring was broken up, work stopped on the building from 1872 to 1876. Construction progressed slowly after the Tweed years, and it was not until 1881 that the building was finally completed. Information from: http://www.nyc.gov/

Lower Manhattan View

I was near the Brooklyn Bridge over the weekend so I took a few photos while I was there. I didn't get many good ones though. This is a view of lower Manhattan seen through the bridge. Have a nice week ahead!
